The production methods of citronellol mainly include the following:
Catalytic hydrogenation method: Using citral or geraniol as raw materials, hydrogenation reaction is carried out in the presence of catalysts such as Raney nickel and Raney cobalt. For example, citral extracted from Java lemongrass oil or lemon eucalyptus oil can be hydrogenated through contact to produce right-handed or racemic citronellol; Similarly, vanillin can also be obtained by catalytic hydrogenation and fractional distillation purification.
Synthesis route: including partial hydrogenation of a mixture of synthetic geraniol and nerolidol, or asymmetric synthesis derived from natural products such as pinene, which can be used to prepare optically active levocitronellol.
Reduction reaction: On a laboratory scale, metal hydrides (such as aluminum amalgam) can be used to reduce citral in anhydrous ethanol, or to reduce geraniol in ether by hydrogen and metallic sodium
